Correcting TA Levels
HIGH TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA)
Causes: Excessive addition of alkaline products e.g. chlorine, soda ash, bicarbonate of soda
Corrective Action:
- Switch the pool pump off.
- Add 500g of HTH® Dry Acid or 500ml of HTH® Easy Acid in one spot in the deep end of the pool away from the metal fixtures.
- Leave the pool pump off for 10 - 15 minutes.
- Thereafter, switch the pump on and continue with normal filtration and chlorination.
- Only check the TA level again after 3 - 4 days. Repeat the above steps every third or fourth day until the TA is within the correct range of 80 - 120 ppm.
- Never let the pH drop below 7.0.

All dosages are based on an average pool with a capacity of 50 000 litres. Adjust according to your pool size.
LOW TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA)
Causes: Excessive addition of Acid to swimming pool water / Weather Conditions
Corrective Action:- Add 1 Litre of HTH® Metal Remover to the pool - follow label instructions.
- Switch the pool pump off. Add 1kg of HTH® Alkalinity Up in one spot in the deep end of the pool away from the metal fixtures. 1 kg of HTH® Alkalinity Up should increase the Total Alkalinity by 10ppm.
- Leave the pump off for 10 - 15 minutes.
- Thereafter, switch the pump on and continue with normal filtration and chlorination
- Only check the TA level again after 3 - 4 days. Repeat the above steps every third or fourth day until the TA is within the correct range of 80 - 120 ppm. Increasing the TA can be a slow process.
- Never let the pH rise above 7.6.
